Alderman Charles Bowman is the 690th Lord Mayor. He is a senior partner with PwC and Alderman of the Lime Street Ward and served as Sheriff of the City of London in 2015/16.
 
Charles was born in Essex in 1961, educated at Uppingham School (where he is a member of the school’s Foundation Board) and graduated from Bristol University with a degree in Architecture.
 
Business career
He joined Price Waterhouse in September 1983, qualified as a chartered accountant in 1986 and was admitted to partnership in 1995. His main area of specialism has been delivering audit and capital market transaction services to large listed and multi-national companies – acting as Lead Partner and Global Relationship Partner for a number of PwC’s key clients. Partnership roles have included setting up and leading PwC’s audit and assurance practice looking after the firm’s FTSE 100 and larger listed clients. Other leadership roles have included Non-Executive Director of PwC’s Tax Practice, leading the firm’s Building Public Trust programme and acting as the partner responsible for the firm’s Senior Networking Programme.
 
Previous/current professional involvement
He has worked internationally, learning Spanish following a secondment to Barcelona and, through his various client relationships and leadership roles, is well connected with the PwC’s network of international offices – the firm is located in 158 countries. His family have historical ties with Sri Lanka and his father worked extensively in Canada.
 
Charles has served on the Council of the Institute of Chartered Accountants England & Wales, is a former Chairman of their Audit and Assurance Faculty and also their Assurance Panel. He is the current Chairman of the Audit Quality Forum and sits on the Advisory Panel of The Prince of Wales’ Accounting for Sustainability Project.
 
Elected as the Alderman of the Ward of Lime Street in May 2013, Charles became the Aldermanic Sheriff of the City of London in September 2015. He has served on a number of the committees of the City of London Corporation including Policy & Resources, Finance, Audit & Risk and Markets. He was also co-Chairman of The City’s Business – with a focus on youth employability.
 
Livery companies
Charles is a member of the Court of the Worshipful Company of Grocers and a liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Chartered Accountants of England & Wales. He is a Magistrate, a governor of the Park Side Primary School Academy, Hackney (part of Mossbourne Federation), Ambassador for the Samaritans, Trustee of the Lord Mayor’s Appeal and Advisor to The Mansion House Scholarship Scheme.
 
His mayoral theme will focus on the ‘Business of Trust’.
 
Family
He is married to Samantha, a veterinary surgeon and liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Woolmen. They have two daughters, Grace (18) and Charlotte (16) and live in Suffolk, although they spend the working week in London. His other interests include golf, tennis, art and architecture and the countryside – including, when allowed, helping to shepherd a small flock of sheep.

Simon Manley, fue director de Europa en el Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO) desde 2011 a 2013, asumiendo la responsabilidad de las políticas relativas a la UE, las relaciones bilaterales del Reino Unido con sus socios europeos y una red de Asuntos Exteriores formada por 57 destinos europeos y más de 2.000 empleados, antes de ser destinado a España.
 
Con anterioridad, también en el FCO, Simon Manley fue director de Defensa y Amenazas Estratégicas (2008-2011), dirigiendo la lucha contra el terrorismo, la proliferación y el narcotráfico del gobierno, también como jefe de la Política Antiterrorista (2006-2009) y jefe del departamento de Economía de la UE, centro-Europa e Irlanda (2002-2006).
 
Fue destinado a la Misión Permanente del Reino Unido ante Naciones Unidas en Nueva York (1993-1998), trabajando en asuntos relacionados con Yugoslavia y la reforma de la ONU, y fue destinado en dos ocasiones a la UE: a la Comisión Europea (2003), ocupándose de la política de Ayudas Estatales, y al Consejo de la UE, (1998-2002), trabajando en temas relativos a Rusia y Ucrania y, posteriormente, Asia oriental.
 
Manley fue nombrado Compañero de la Distinguida Orden de San Miguel y San Jorge (CMG) durante las festividades organizadas en honor del cumpleaños de Su Majestad la Reina, en 2009, y Comendador de la Orden del Mérito de la República de Polonia en 2004.
 
Se licenció en Historia Moderna en el Magdalen College, de Oxford, y tiene un Máster en Relaciones Internacionales de la Escuela de Posgrado de la Universidad de Yale, en Estados Unidos. Está casado con María Isabel Fernández Utges Manley, abogada especializada en Propiedad Intelectual, Competencia y Regulación. El matrimonio tiene tres hijas de 13, 12 y 5 años.
